3-Day Lake Mburo National Park Package

Lake Mburo National Park offers an exceptional all-round wildlife experience, combining daytime and nighttime game drives with a boat safari, horseback riding, and an immersive community walk. Covering approximately 370 km², it is Uganda's smallest national park and the closest major wildlife destination to Kampala, located about 240 km from the city. The journey from Kampala typically takes around 3–4 hours by road.

Despite its compact size, the park supports an impressive variety of wildlife, including zebras, giraffes, elands, impalas, Cape buffaloes, warthogs, Uganda kobs, monkeys, and numerous other species. One of its most distinctive attractions is the opportunity to explore the park on horseback, allowing visitors to observe wildlife from a unique and intimate perspective.

Lake Mburo is also an excellent destination for bird enthusiasts, with roughly 250 recorded bird species. The combination of diverse habitats, abundant wildlife, scenic landscapes, and activities available both inside and around the park makes Lake Mburo National Park an ideal destination for travelers seeking a varied and memorable Ugandan safari experience.

Day 1 — Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park for evening and night game drive

Your safari guide will pick you up early in the morning and provide a brief orientation before setting off for Lake Mburo National Park. The journey takes approximately four hours, passing through lively towns and rural communities along the Kampala–Mbarara highway.

Upon arrival at the park, you will enjoy lunch before preparing for your first wildlife experience—a short afternoon game drive. Lake Mburo is renowned for its large populations of zebras, and you will have the opportunity to spot these beautiful animals alongside buffaloes, giraffes, impalas, and the elusive eland.

After the game drive, proceed to your lodge for check-in and some time to unwind before dinner.

Once night falls, prepare for an exciting nocturnal game drive. Beginning around 6:00 p.m. and continuing into the late evening, this unique experience offers a chance to discover the park's nighttime wildlife. Depending on luck and conditions, you may encounter leopards, spotted hyenas, jackals, civets, genets, serval cats, and other creatures that become active after dark.

Day 2 — A full day Lake Mburo National Park experience

After breakfast, your safari guide will set out with you for a morning experience in Lake Mburo National Park, based on your preferred activity: either an exciting game drive or an insightful community walk.

Lake Mburo has a remarkable conservation history. The area once experienced serious human-wildlife conflicts, which led to the elimination of some wildlife, including lions. However, improved cooperation between local communities and the government has transformed the situation, creating a more harmonious relationship between people and wildlife. As part of ongoing conservation efforts, several species have been reintroduced to the park, including lions, although sightings remain uncommon, as well as giraffes.

During the game drive, you will explore the park's diverse landscapes while looking out for large herds of buffaloes, zebras, impalas, and numerous bird species. The drive also offers opportunities to encounter other wildlife that inhabits this unique Ugandan savannah ecosystem.

Following the morning adventure, you will return to Rwakobo Rock for lunch and some time to unwind. Later in the afternoon, you will take a short drive to the lakeside, where you will meet your boat captain for a relaxing two-hour cruise on Lake Mburo.

As you glide across the lake, keep an eye out for hippos and crocodiles along the water's edge, as well as an impressive variety of aquatic and woodland birds. Bird enthusiasts may be rewarded with sightings of the African fish eagle and, with some luck, the elusive African finfoot. Along the shoreline, buffaloes, antelopes, and other wildlife frequently gather to drink and graze, creating excellent opportunities for photography and wildlife viewing.

After the boat cruise, return to the lodge for dinner and a peaceful overnight stay.
