4-Day Cross Border Gorilla and Golden Monkey Tracking Safari in Uganda

This cross-border Rwanda–Uganda primate safari is designed for travelers seeking rare wildlife encounters and dramatic volcanic scenery. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda's smallest national park, covering about 33.7 km² in the country's southwestern corner. It lies within the spectacular Virunga Mountains, bordering Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is the only park in Uganda where the endangered golden monkeys can be encountered. The park is dominated by three volcanic peaks: Mount Muhabura, Mount Sabyinyo, and Mount Gahinga, offering sweeping views across the surrounding landscapes.

The park is reached in about 9 hours by road from Entebbe International Airport, or a 1-hour-10-minute domestic flight followed by a road transfer. From Kigali, Rwanda to Mgahinga is approximately 4 hours by road. Continue across the border into Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for the defining experience of tracking endangered mountain gorillas through one of Africa's oldest and most biodiverse rainforests.

The adventure concludes at the serene shores of Lake Bunyonyi, celebrated for its misty hills, scattered islands, and deeply tranquil atmosphere. It is an ideal place to slow down, reflect on your primate encounters, and take in one of Uganda's most picturesque landscapes.

Cross Border Gorilla and Golden Monkey Safari

Your day begins with an early breakfast before a short transfer to the park headquarters for a pre-trek briefing by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Here, you will meet your ranger guide and fellow trekkers, receive essential guidelines, and be assigned a habituated mountain gorilla family to visit.

Set off on the unforgettable adventure of mountain gorilla trekking through the misty rainforest and bamboo-covered slopes of Bwindi. Accompanied by experienced UWA ranger guides and trackers, follow forest trails in search of your assigned gorilla family. The trek may take approximately 3 to 6 hours, depending on the gorillas' movements and the location of the group that day.

While the hike can be physically demanding in places, the reward is extraordinary: a precious hour in the presence of a mountain gorilla family. Watch the powerful silverback keep a quiet eye over his troop, observe mothers caring for their young, and see playful juveniles moving through the vegetation—an intimate wildlife encounter few experiences can match.

Enjoy your packed lunch in the forest before returning to the trailhead. Later, continue through southwestern Uganda's scenic terraced hills toward the tranquil waters of Lake Bunyonyi. The afternoon is at leisure, with optional activities including canoeing, swimming, guided nature walks, hiking along the highland trails, birdwatching, or visiting nearby local communities.
