11-Day Uganda Gorilla, Chimpanzee & Wildlife Journey
Experience Uganda’s mountain gorillas, chimpanzees and spectacular wildlife across some of the country’s most remarkable destinations.
Explore SafariThis specialist-led 20-day Uganda Birding Safari is designed for serious birders seeking one of Africa's most rewarding and diverse avifaunal experiences. Uganda, the "Pearl of Africa," supports more than 1,000 recorded bird species within an exceptional mosaic of Albertine Rift montane forests, lowland rainforest, papyrus wetlands, acacia savanna, woodland, and the shores of the Great Lakes.
From the ancient rainforest of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to the species-rich savannas of Queen Elizabeth National Park, this carefully paced expedition targets Uganda's most sought-after forest specials, Albertine Rift endemics, regional rarities, and classic East African birds. BirdLife International has identified 34 Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas across Uganda, reflecting the country's extraordinary concentration of habitats and its outstanding importance to African bird conservation.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is widely regarded as one of Africa's premier forest-birding sites. Its dense montane and transitional forest provides exceptional opportunities for Albertine Rift endemics and elusive understorey species, including African Green Broadbill, Grauer's Rush Warbler, Shelley's Crimsonwing, Dusky Crimsonwing, Ruwenzori Apalis, Mountain Masked Apalis, Regal Sunbird, Red-faced Woodland Warbler, Handsome Francolin, and the highly localised Grauer's Scrub-Warbler.
The itinerary also explores the famed Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda's most species-rich savanna birding landscape, with a checklist exceeding [600] species. Its varied habitats—open grassland, bush country, crater lakes, riverine forest, wetlands, and the Kazinga Channel—support an outstanding mix of waterbirds, raptors, woodland specialists, and Albertine Rift taxa.
On arrival at Entebbe International Airport, meet your specialist birding guide for a transfer to your hotel and a briefing on the exceptional 20-day Uganda birding expedition ahead. Relax after your journey before dinner and an overnight stay.

Accommodation Options:
Begin the morning with an early breakfast before transferring to the landing site for a canoe excursion into the Mabamba Wetland Bird Sanctuary. Nestled on the shores of Lake Victoria, Mabamba Swamp remains one of Uganda's few community-protected wetlands, an extensive papyrus system woven with channels and lagoons that shelters several breeding pairs of the highly sought-after Shoebill.
This enigmatic, monotypic species ranks among Africa's most iconic birds, and today's paddle through the reed-lined channels will be dedicated to tracking it down. Along the way, keep binoculars ready for a fine cross-section of East African wetland avifauna, including Pink-backed Pelican, Squacco Heron, Yellow-billed Duck, Long-tailed Cormorant, Malachite Kingfisher, Long-toed Plover, Blue-breasted Bee-eater, and Blue-headed Coucal, among others.
From the wetland, transfer back to Entebbe Botanical Gardens for further birding, targeting species such as African Openbill, African Green Pigeon, Grey Kestrel, Great Blue Turaco, Ross's Turaco, various swifts and sunbirds, Red-headed Lovebird, weavers, finches, and more. Conclude the day with a transfer back to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

Following an early breakfast, depart for Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, transiting through the rolling savannah-woodland mosaic of central Uganda—terrain that hints at the avian richness awaiting ahead. Upon arrival, check into your accommodation and unwind over a leisurely lunch, allowing time to acclimate to the sanctuary's tranquil bushland rhythms before the afternoon's birding pursuits.
As the day cools into golden afternoon light, set out on foot across Ziwa's savannah trails and riverine fringes, where raptors and woodland specialists command attention in equal measure. Scan the skies for the Western Banded Snake Eagle and Long-crested Eagle riding thermals above the grasslands, while the more secretive Lizard Buzzard favors perched vigils along tree lines.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Accommodation Options:
Following breakfast, we head into the savanna-woodland mosaic of Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for a focused morning of birding, tracking both resident specials and elusive nocturnal species. Keep eyes skyward for raptors including the Western Banded Snake Eagle, Bateleur, and Long-crested Eagle, while the sharp-eyed Lizard Buzzard patrols the mid-canopy. Ground-dwelling Crested Francolin work the thickets, and colorful surprises await in the White-crested Turaco and Bruce's Green Pigeon foraging in fruiting trees.
After a relaxed lunch, we depart Ziwa and travel to Murchison Falls National Park via the Top of the Falls — a dramatic transition from woodland birding to riverine and gorge habitat. Here, the Victoria Nile is compressed through a narrow gorge before plunging 45 meters in a thunderous cascade, creating a unique microhabitat for species adapted to spray-zone cliffs and fast water.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Following an early breakfast, set out on a game and birding drive across the savannah, timing your return to camp for a leisurely lunch. Early morning light in this stretch of Murchison Falls National Park offers prime conditions for both mammal activity and passerine song, so keep binoculars ready from the outset.
Post-lunch, transfer to the Paraa northern bank for a boat cruise upriver toward the base of the Falls — one of the most rewarding water-based birding routes in East Africa. The Nile's edge here teems with life: expect close encounters with hippo pods and basking Nile crocodiles, while the riverine vegetation and exposed sandbanks yield a superb cross-section of specialist species.

Moving quietly along the wetland trails and surrounding vegetation, you will search for the elusive White-spotted Flufftail, a shy and secretive species often detected more readily by its call than by sight.
After lunch, continue to Semliki Valley National Park for an afternoon nature walk through its lowland forest habitats. This distinctive birding environment offers opportunities to encounter White-thighed Hornbill, White-crested Hornbill, Black-casqued Wattled Hornbill and Dwarf Hornbill, among other western forest species.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Depart at first light, when forest activity is at its peak, for a guided nature walk through one of East Africa's most distinctive birding landscapes.
Semuliki lies within the Albertine Rift, on the eastern fringe of the Congo Basin. Its lowland tropical forest has a pronounced Central African character, supporting numerous Congo-forest species at the easternmost limit of their distribution. The park's checklist exceeds [440] species, making it an essential destination for specialists targeting Albertine Rift and Guinea–Congo biome birds.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
