Our Rwanda–Uganda Double Primate Safari is a 3-day cross-border adventure combining two of Africa's most sought-after trekking experiences: Golden Monkeys in Rwanda and Mountain Gorillas in Uganda. The journey begins and ends in Kigali, with a scenic overland crossing into Uganda at its heart. Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you'll be welcomed by your guide and driven to Volcanoes National Park for your first night's stay amid the shadow of the Virunga volcanoes.
Day two is dedicated to the golden monkey, one of the Virungas' rarest and most charismatic primates. Two habituated troops are currently open to visitors—one ranging the slopes of Mount Karisimbi, the other nestled in the bamboo thickets of Mount Sabyinyo. These endangered monkeys, easily recognized by their vivid amber-gold coats, move in tight social bands, foraging on bamboo shoots, wild fruits, and forest leaves as they weave through the undergrowth.
On day three, the adventure shifts species and country: you'll cross into Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to track mountain gorillas, another critically endangered great ape found only in this pocket of Central Africa's highland forests. Guided by experienced trackers, you'll follow forest trails through dense vegetation for a face-to-face encounter with a wild gorilla family—an experience often described as life-changing.
Your final day brings a return transfer to Kigali International Airport, closing the loop on a safari that spans two countries and two conservation icons. Along the way, the route threads through the fog-draped Virunga range, a volcanic chain shared by Rwanda and Uganda, passing from the terraced farmland surrounding Rwanda's Parc National des Volcans to the untamed, ancient forests of Bwindi (or nearby Mgahinga).
